Front Cover Developments/Progress

MY FINAL COVER

INSPIRTION

This cover has inspired me to create a more unusual style as it relates to a popular music artist and pays tribute to David Bowie on the cover of a fashion magazine. Although Vogue is not a music magazine, I am going to use the idea of a black and white main image with a colour layer on top to create an interesting and eye-catching cover for my R&B music magazine.

DRAFT

PROCESS
I began with my main image in the centre of the page, exagerating the direct adress. Equally I adapted the colours of the image to be black and white as this fits with the genre and my house style, it also emphisises the shadows and hihlights of the image creating the mood assosiated with R&B. I manipulated the image by cropping out specific parts, airbrushing her skin to create a flawless effect as well as removing spots using the blend brush, increasing the brighness of her eyes and the darkness of her hair, and adapting the shadows on her face.
I tried to use an arrow on my image to make it more abstract and eye-catching, using the inspiration of the David Bowie cover. I used a gold coloured to match tyhe house style and added a white glow to make it stand out on her face.
I decided to try without the arrow and tried a number of different fonts for my masthead. The gold and black theme is clearly shown through the masthead and helps to create the house style of my product straight away.
The skyline and sticker are conventions I have chosen to include on my cover and I have carefully re-enforced the gold and black house style colours. Equally the prize is an A-White CD, which links to the main image of the artist which is A-White, later the main feature story will determine this.
I have located all of my feature stories carefully around the edge of Amanda's face so the audience can still clearly see her, while I have chosen to locate the main feature story which links to the image at the bottom right to seperate it from the others, I have also used a larger and more dramatic font to draw in the reader to the main story. Many fonts have been used as this is a convention of magazine covers.
The barcode, date of issue, and price have been added to the lower left of the page so they are clearly visable to the reader and inform them of the nesecary information without taking away too much room or focus from the main image.
I tried many differnet ways of incorperating the gold and black theme into the mastheaad and decided on the gradient overlay effect to make a transision smoothly between the colours, while still ontop of Amanda's face so it can be seen by the reader and recognised quickly which is important in the success of the products sale.
I also tried many different manipulations of the main image before deciding on the classic black and white, for instance I tried to make the image look retro although I felt this was less typical of R&B products and more popular in Indie products.
By manipulating the colour balance and hilights and shadows of the image I was able to create some unique edits that enhanced Amanda's appearance. They worked to draw in the audience and make her more eye-cathing.
To improve this draft I should remove the white boarder on the main image which is visable behingthe masthead, and add a shadow or outer glow to the plug to make it more recognisable as a plug and stand out to the reader.
